“The Big Red Books – a history of the Victoria County History project, and the work of the VCH Essex Trust”. 3pm for a 3.30pm start
Saturday 11th April 2026 – VCH County Editor Herbert Eiden will be giving a talk at Harwich museum
Saturday 26th September 2026 – Annual Symposium at Galleywood Heritage Centre
The theme for our 2026 annual symposium will be “The Essex Landscape”. Further details to follow.
Past Events
Tuesday 6th January 2026 – VCH National Director Catherine Clarke at the Essex Record Office.
Professor Clarke’s talk, “Maldon, Saxons, Vikings” drew on her recently published book , A History of England in 25 Poems, which explores the history of England through 25 poems written between the eighth century and today.
Saturday 4th October 2025 – Annual Symposium at Galleywood Heritage Centre.

Saturday 28th June 2025 – Annual General Meeting at Cressing Temple Barns.
This was followed by a talk by Neil Wiffen, ‘Where’s the War? The extent to which Essex farmers were ‘Digging for Victory’, c.1790-1820’ and a guided tour of the site led by Hilary Maynott, one of Cressing Temple Barns’ tour guides.
